# Settings and preferences

> Customize your Freiya experience with dark mode, language selection, account management, and personalization options

Personalize Freiya to match your preferences and workflow. Manage your account, customize the interface, and configure features to work exactly how you want.

## Account settings

Manage your core account information and security.

### Profile information

Update your personal details:

**Editable fields:**

* Display name
* Email address (requires verification if changed)
* Profile picture (coming soon)
* Bio/description (coming soon)

<Note>
  Changing your email requires verifying the new address before it takes effect.
</Note>

### Change password

Update your password for enhanced security:

    * Current password
    * New password
    * Confirm new password

**Password requirements:**

* Minimum 8 characters
* Mix of letters and numbers recommended
* Special characters recommended

<Tip>
  Use a unique password you don't use elsewhere, and consider a password manager.

### Email preferences

Control email communications from Freiya:

**Notification emails:**

* ✉️ Account security alerts
* ✉️ Subscription and billing updates
* ✉️ Usage limit warnings
* ✉️ Weekly research digest (optional)
* ✉️ Feature announcements (optional)

## Display preferences

### Dark mode

Toggle between light and dark themes:

    * **System** - Matches your OS setting (default)
    * **Light** - Always use light theme
    * **Dark** - Always use dark theme

**Quick toggle:**
You can also toggle dark mode anytime with:

* Floating button (bottom-right corner)
* Keyboard shortcut: `Ctrl/Cmd + D`
* Top menu → Theme icon

<Tip>
  Dark mode reduces eye strain during late-night research sessions and saves battery on OLED screens.

### Language selection

Freiya supports multiple languages:

**Available languages:**

* 🇺🇸 English (EN)
* 🇪🇸 Spanish (ES)

**To change language:**

### Interface customization

**Sidebar settings:**

* Collapsed or expanded by default
* Pin/unpin items
* Reorder menu items (coming soon)

**Density settings:**

* Comfortable (default) - More spacing
* Compact - Fits more on screen
* Spacious - Maximum readability

## Subscription management

View and manage your Freiya subscription.

### Current plan

See your active subscription tier:

* Plan name (Free, Pro, Nova)
* Monthly or annual billing
* Next billing date
* Price and currency

### Usage statistics

Monitor your usage against tier limits:

**Displayed metrics:**

* Papers in library (X / limit)
* Papers added this month (X / monthly limit)
* Paper collections (X / limit)
* Chat collections (X / limit)
* AI messages per model

### Upgrade or downgrade

Change your subscription tier:

    Upgrades are prorated, you only pay the difference for the remaining period.

### Payment methods

Manage payment information:

**Update payment method:**

1. Go to **Settings → Subscription**
2. Click **Update Payment Method**
3. Enter new card details via Stripe
4. Save securely

**Billing history:**

* View past invoices
* Download receipts
* See transaction history

### Cancel subscription

<Steps>

    Find **Cancel Subscription** button
  </Step>

  <Step title="Choose timing">
    * Cancel immediately (rare)
    * Cancel at period end (recommended)

    Confirm cancellation
  </Step>

**What happens:**

* Access continues until period end
* Auto-downgrade to Free tier
* Data retained for 30 days
* Can resubscribe anytime

<Note>
  No refunds for partial billing periods, but you keep access until your paid period ends.
</Note>

## Notification settings

Configure how Freiya notifies you about events.

### In-app notifications

Control toast notifications that appear in the app:

**Notification types:**

* Success messages (paper added, chat saved)
* Error alerts (limit reached, operation failed)
* Information (feature tips, updates)
* Warnings (approaching limits, important changes)

**Settings:**

* Enable/disable all notifications
* Set duration (3s, 5s, 10s)
* Position (top-right, bottom-center, etc.)
* Sound on/off

### Usage alerts

Get notified when approaching limits:

* **80% capacity** - Warning when nearing limits
* **100% capacity** - Alert when limit reached
* **Monthly reset** - Reminder when limits reset

Enable or disable each alert type individually.

## Privacy settings

Control your data and privacy.

### Data export

Download all your Freiya data:

    Export prepares (usually \< 5 minutes)

* All papers and metadata
* All chats and conversations
* Annotations and highlights
* Collections
* Account information

### Account deletion

Permanently delete your account and all data:

    Scroll to danger zone
  </Step>

  <Step title="Click Delete Account">
    Red **Delete My Account** button
  </Step>

    Acknowledge data loss and confirm
  </Step>

<Danger>
  Account deletion is PERMANENT! All papers, chats, annotations, and data will be deleted within 30 days. Export your data first if you want to keep anything.

### Privacy controls

**Additional privacy settings:**

* Make profile public/private (coming soon)
* Control what others can see (coming soon)
* Opt out of anonymized analytics
* Review third-party integrations

## Advanced settings

### Keyboard shortcuts

View and customize shortcuts:

1. Go to **Settings → Keyboard**
2. See all available shortcuts
3. Customize bindings (coming soon)
4. Reset to defaults
5. Export/import shortcuts

### API access

**Generate API keys:**

1. Go to **Settings → API**
2. Click **Create New Key**
3. Name and configure key
4. Copy key (shown once!)
5. Use in your applications

**API key management:**

* Revoke keys anytime
* View usage per key
* Set expiration dates
* Scope permissions

### Experimental features

Try beta features before general release:

**Enable beta features:**

1. Go to **Settings → Experimental**
2. Toggle features you want to try
3. Provide feedback on what works/doesn't

**Current beta features:**

* New PDF viewer engine
* Advanced search algorithms
* Multi-paper comparison
* Collaborative annotations

## Session management

### Active sessions

View and manage where you're signed in:

**Session information:**

* Device type (desktop, mobile, tablet)
* Browser
* IP address
* Last active time
* Location (approximate)

**Actions:**

* Revoke individual sessions
* Logout from all devices
* See current session

### Security

**Session security features:**

* Auto-logout after 24h inactivity
* Secure JWT tokens
* Token refresh on activity
* Encrypted storage

## Troubleshooting

    1. Check internet connection
    2. Refresh the page
    3. Clear browser cache
    4. Try a different browser
    5. Contact support if persistent

    Verify:

    * New email isn't already in use
    * Verification email received
    * Clicking verification link
    * Old email still accessible
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Dark mode not working">
    Check:

    * Browser supports dark mode CSS
    * No conflicting browser extensions
    * Try setting to "Dark" instead of "System"
    * Clear cache and reload
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Payment method won't update">
    This is handled by Stripe:

    * Verify card details are correct
    * Check card isn't expired
    * Sufficient funds available
    * Contact your bank if declined
    * Try a different card
  </Accordion>
